Hello my Omschooligans! Here are the Omschool Tree Fort, we're starting a summer reading program! Our first subject is Science Magic Experiments. These are based these off the Harry Potter book series. So you could use these to celebrate a Harry Potter birthday party or just for fun summer party. I've included free printable book club materials plus science experiments and kitchen chemistry activities to coordinate with the books. Children's literature selections are given for follow up to each of the science experiments. Some are stories for younger children but that doesn't mean older children won't enjoy them!)
Wizard Magic & Kitchen Science: An Apprentice's Guide
Introduction: Explore fun chemistry magic tricks inspired by Harry Potter and other fantasy themes. Designed for teachers and homeschool parents to engage students with hands-on kitchen science experiments.
Activity Outline
1. Eerie Ectoplasm
The Science: Mix equal parts Elmer's school glue and liquid laundry starch, working together with fingers until it forms a rubbery putty. Trapped air causes it to burp when folded, proving that air takes up space and has pressure.

2. Spirit Writing (Invisible Ink)

3. Rubber Bones
The Science: Scrub a chicken bone clean and soak it in white vinegar for 24 hours. The vinegar breaks down and dissolves the hardened calcium and mineral deposits, leaving the bone flexible.

4. "Unbreakable" Plastic Bag
The Science: Fill a Ziploc bag with colored water and gently push a sharpened pencil completely through it. The plastic polymer stretches and seals around the hole to prevent spills.

5. Wizard Magic Fire Shield
The Science: Adults-only experiment. Coat a bandanna in rubbing alcohol, squeeze out excess (leave damp), and hold a match to the tip. 6. Haunted Beans (Mexican Jumping Beans)

10. Magic Moon Sand
- Mix 4 cups of all-purpose flour with 1/2 cup of baby oil (or coconut oil) in a large bowl. Use your hands or a whisk to blend until the texture resembles damp sand—it should be moldable but crumble easily. Add a few drops of food coloring to the oil for colored sand.Variations and Tips
- Taste-Safe Option: To make this safe for mouthing toddlers, substitute the baby oil with vegetable, canola, or coconut oil. Additionally, bake your flour on a sheet pan at 350°F for 5 minutes and let it cool completely before mixing, which kills any natural bacteria.
- Sand & Cornstarch Alternative: For a different texture that behaves more like real beach sand, try a ratio of 5 parts play sand, 3 parts cornstarch, and 1 part baby oil.

The Connection: It is a whimsical, playful story about molding and imagining things out of sand, making it a delightful read-aloud while the kids are busy squishing and shaping their moon sand.
Science Magic Snack Crafts
1. Edible "Eerie Ectoplasm" Slime Jello Cups
The Experiment Connection: Pairs with Eerie Ectoplasm (Activity 1).
The Recipe:
Prepare a batch of bright green lime or lemon-lime Jell-O according to the box instructions, but reduce the cold water amount by about one-fourth so it sets up extra thick and jiggly.
Once set, let the kids use spoons to whip and stir it into a oozy, wiggly "ectoplasm" slime consistency right in their cups.
Top with a few gummy worms or spooky candy eyes peering out from the green goo.
Here is how you can make a fizzing, bubbling hard candy at home:
Ingredients:
1 cup granulated white sugar
1/3 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup water
1 tsp flavoring extract (like cherry, lemon, or strawberry)
Food coloring (a few drops of your favorite wizard color)
Fizzy Science Powder Mix:
2 tbsp citric acid powder (this gives it the sour "magic" kick)
2 tbsp baking soda (creates the fizz when mixed with saliva/moisture)
2 tbsp powdered sugar (keeps the mixture from clumping)
Instructions:
Prep Your Pan: Line a baking sheet with heavy-duty aluminum foil or parchment paper and lightly grease it with non-stick cooking spray or butter.
Mix the Sugar Base: In a small saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, corn syrup, and water. Stir over medium heat until the sugar completely dissolves.

The Fizz Secret: In a separate small, completely dry bowl, whisk together the citric acid, baking soda, and powdered sugar. Toss your crushed hard candy crystals into this powder mixture so they get a light coating.

Hard Candy Shell: The sugar trapped the heat and cooled into a glassy structure.
The Crackle: Commercial Pop Rocks are injected with high-pressure CO_2 gas (600 psi) during manufacturing, which is why they pop loudly. At home, combining the hard candy crystals with the citric acid and baking soda mixture mimics that effect: when the candy melts in your mouth, the acid and baking soda mix with your saliva, creating a rapid, fizzy chemical reaction that bubbles and pops on your tongue
3. Exploding Popcorn "Fizzy Fizz" Concoctions
The Experiment Connection: Pairs with Haunted Beans (Activity 6) and Genie in a Bottle (Activity 9).
The Recipe:
Set up a snack-mix station where kids combine freshly popped popcorn (the jumping beans) with sweet and fizzy mix-ins like Pop Rocks candy, colorful M&Ms, and pretzel sticks (magic wands).
When they eat the Pop Rocks along with the popcorn, they'll get a tiny, crackling "chemical reaction" right on their taste buds that feels just like wizard magic.
Flaming Dessert Science Experiments (Adults only, to demonstrate)
1. Flaming Bananas Foster (or Cherries Jubilee)
The Inspiration: A fantastic demonstration of how alcohol burns at a low, visible flame, just like the fire shield bandanna! These do contain alcohol which burns off, but you should still request parent permission for children to sample.
Ingredients:
4 tbsp unsalted butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
3 firm bananas, peeled and sliced lengthwise (or 1 can of pitted dark sweet cherries, drained)
1/4 cup dark rum or brandy
Vanilla ice cream for serving
Instructions:
Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar and cinnamon until dissolved and bubbly.
Add the sliced bananas (or cherries) and sauté for 2–3 minutes until they begin to soften and caramelize in the sauce.
The Magic Flame: Remove the skillet briefly from the heat source. Pour in the rum or brandy. Using a long-handled match or lighter, carefully ignite the vapors over the pan. (The alcohol will safely burn off with a bright blue/orange flame as the sauce bubbles).
Once the flames naturally die out, spoon the warm fruit and sauce generously over bowls of vanilla ice cream.
2. Flaming Saganaki (Greek Fried Cheese)
The Inspiration: A real restaurant favorite that uses high-proof alcohol to create an impressive tableside fireball that leaves the cheese warm, melty, and delicious.
Ingredients:
8 oz block of firm Greek cheese (traditional Kasseri, Kefalotyri, or a firm substitute like Graviera or high-melting Halloumi)
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 tbsp olive oil (for frying)
1 oz high-proof brandy (such as Greek Metaxa or clear Ouzo/brandy of at least 80+ proof)
Fresh lemon wedges
Instructions:
Lightly dredge the block of cheese in cold water, then coat it evenly in flour, shaking off any excess.
Heat the olive oil in a heavy skillet (cast iron works wonderfully) over medium-high heat.
Fry the cheese block for about 2–3 minutes per side until the crust is golden brown and crispy, and the inside is warm and gooey.
The Magic Flame: Transfer the hot cheese to a flame-safe serving dish or keep it right in the pan. Pour the brandy directly over the top of the cheese.
Carefully ignite the brandy with a long match. Let the dramatic blue flame flicker and extinguish itself.
Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the flaming cheese right as the fire goes out to create a sudden, sizzling pop of steam, then serve immediately with warm crusty bread.

In the story, Milo is Bored (a word coined in the early1960's to reflect teen response to post-war complacency). Through a series metaphorical allusions, Milo, Tock (a Watch Dog), and the Spelling Bee learn to look at things differently, to really look at things and enjoy them
